New support for DFC scholars: More than $20M Unlocked human potential: Limitless

Last fall, an anonymous donor put forth a challenge: Dougherty Family College will receive $10 million if it raised another $10 million by June 30, 2023. Challenge accepted! 233 individual, corporate and foundation donors gave more than 400 gifts in FY23 401 gifts from individuals, foundations and corporations met the match criteria 16 of the gifts were major gifts of $50,000 or more 2 of the gifts were $1 million or more

In total, more than $10 million was raised and the match was met.

These funds are transformational, allowing us to provide additional scholarships for tuition and wrap- around supports, as well as increase the number of continuation scholarships for DFC graduates to pursue their bachelor’s degree at St. Thomas. Because of the vision and generosity of our donors, we are securing the future of a college that is making a difference in reducing poverty long-term. Thank you for ensuring that DFC continues to be a force for the common good.

BELIEVE IN YOUR DREAM is a message infused in Meet a few of our four-year St. Thomas students and recent are believing in their dreams.

Cheyene Bialke , UST Class of ‘24 Major: Digital Media and Journalism

“I used to really struggle with writing as a kid. I had a writing tutor and ended up finding a love for writing. DFC and my internship really helped boost my skills to a professional level. I was so used to writing school papers, but I didn’t know how to write for the outside world. If it wasn’t for DFC, I don’t think I would have pursued journalism at all. I would have probably gone a different direction. I have a lot to thank them for.” Cheyene works for the St. Thomas Newsroom as a student writer. In addition to writing, she has a keen interest in digital media, photography and pop culture, and hopes to build a career that combines these passions.

Freddy Flores Dominguez UST Class of ‘24 Major: Justice and Peace Studies ,

“We need to create room for people. It’s unacceptable to continue to encourage the mediocre or average standard. We know that if you have a high school transcript with all Cs, you can’t make it to the U. You can’t make it here, or anywhere. I think that’s a really important

point for underrepresented groups. I didn’t have those grades, but DFC got me up to speed and look where I am today. “DFC gave me an opening, a pathway to where I want to go.” After graduating from DFC, Freddy was invited to participate in the Excel Research Scholars Program at St. Thomas. He focused his individual study on the Chicano social movement of the 1960s and was selected by the Minnesota Private College Council to present his work at the Capitol in 2023. After earning his bachelor’s degree, Freddy hopes to attend law school or pursue a master’s degree in public policy.

Cesar Osvaldo Mendez Portillo , UST Class of ‘23 Majors: Business Administration and Marketing Management “I went to DFC with the mindset that I needed to figure out what to do in life. A lot of people at DFC don’t really know what they want in the beginning, but we all have similar life experiences and can support each other while we figure it out.” Cesar graduated with his bachelor’s degree in May 2023. He is employed at U.S. Bank in business banking, working with small-business owners. Cesar will also be joining the first class of the new Diversity in Leadership master’s degree program at St. Thomas in the fall.

Roman Adhikari , UST Class of ’23 Major: Accounting Minor: Data Analytics

“DFC is unique compared to everything else. It’s very inclusive in the curriculum and in the way it’s set up. I came to America when I was 10, but I never really felt included in education. At DFC, you’re learning about so many different perspectives, not just through one lens. That made me see myself in education for the first time.”

Roman has an internship this summer in the accounting department of an insurance company. He plans to become a Certified Public Accountant upon graduation this fall and work for an accounting firm. He holds a real estate license and would like to someday combine his passion for real estate with his skills in accounting.
