If your answer to these questions is yes, we invite you to apply for admission to the five-year combined BA/MA program in English, the only such program in the region. This program allows students to complete graduate-level coursework during their senior year and streamlines the MA admission process. After receiving your MA, you will have the qualifications necessary to enter a PhD program in English or to excel in the professional fields of writing, publishing or editing. CAREERS IN ENGLISH A knack for descriptive and persuasive writing, analytical and empathetic reading, and cultural awareness have made our English majors attractive to employers.

English majors follow one of four tracks: Literature and Writing, Creative Writing, Professional Writing, and Secondary Education (5-12). Within each you’ll find freedom to pursue your passions, and to develop new ones. A springboard into all kinds of inquiry, English plays well with other disciplines; many of our majors also complete majors or minors in psychology, environmental studies, justice and peace studies, neuroscience, women’s studies, philosophy, Catholic studies, communication studies, journalism, entrepreneurship, biology, business … and the list goes on.

English minors have four options: the English minor gives you flexibility to select any four courses of your choice, and minors in Creative Writing, Professional Writing, and Narrative Medicine allow you to curate around your interests. Any of these minors make great add-ons to majors in a variety of disciplines. STUDENT-FACULTY RESEARCH English majors get hands-on experience researching with professors and presenting papers at local and national conferences. STUDY ABROAD IN ENGLISH: WE’RE ALL OVER THE MAP

English is a global subject, and we encourage you to get out and explore it on site. Our English faculty offer specially-tailored January Term courses such as Introduction to Italian Cinema and Modernist Europe: Nationalism, War, and Recovery in Literature, and the College of Arts and Sciences offers two popular semester-long programs in Italy (Rome) and Ireland (Limerick). We also partner with the Office of Study Abroad to recommend other J-term, semester- and year-long programs around the world.
