CREATE YOUR LEGACY AT ST. THOMAS

Experience pride in knowing that future generations of Tommies will benefit from your generosity.

THE FINNS AND THE START OF LEGACY GIVING AT ST. THOMAS In 1880, William Finn gave his farmland* to Bishop John Ireland – in exchange for lifetime income – to establish the future College of St. Thomas. Finn’s gift in return for a life income became, in effect, St. Thomas’ first legacy gift – a charitable gift annuity. In 1889, William and his wife, Elizabeth, made the second legacy gift benefitting St. Thomas – a bequest.

The Finns created a legacy that brought their values to life, and you can, too.

*The University of St. Thomas occupies the ancestral and current homelands of the Dakota people, Mni Sota Makoce.

THE FINN LEGACY SOCIETY

The Finn Legacy Society honors the more than 800 legacy donors to the University of St. Thomas. Although there may be many financial and tax benefits for a legacy donor, the greatest benefit of all is the satisfaction of creating a lasting and meaningful gift in support of St. Thomas students. Legacy gifts play an important part in helping St. Thomas fulfill its mission “to educate students to be morally responsible leaders who think critically, act wisely and work skillfully to advance the common good.”

YOU CAN MAKE AN IMPACT When you provide a gift through your estate plan, you are investing in the human potential of future generations. Whatever the size, gifts from our Finn Legacy Society members have provided scholarships to deserving students, enhanced academic programs, supported students’ social and spiritual growth, strengthened athletics and have helped to keep St. Thomas a strong and vital institution. Many Finn members use their planned gift to endow a named family scholarship. Whatever its purpose and size, your planned gift will ensure your impact lasts beyond your lifetime. If you would like more information about creating a legacy at the University of St. Thomas that truly reflects your values – or if you have already included St. Thomas in your estate plans – please contact the Office of Planned Giving. As a Finn Legacy Society member, you will be invited to special events and (with your permission) be remembered in our annual honor roll of donors. Most importantly, you will join a long line of generous supporters who have made it a priority to make a difference in the lives of future St. Thomas students.

“WE GIVE BECAUSE OUR EDUCATION IS WHAT STARTED US OFF SO WELL, not just academically, but socially and spiritually, and we want that to continue for others. While the St. Thomas campus has changed physically over the years, it still has that warm, comfortable feeling and emphasis on the common good that has had such an impact on us.” – Kris and Jim `71 Smith

YOU DON’T HAVE TO BE WEALTHY TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE

Did you know that you can:

“MY FATHER SHOWED ME BY EXAMPLE THAT ONE’S LIFE HAS MORE MEANING WHEN YOU JOIN WITH OTHERS TO SUPPORT IMPORTANT INSTITUTIONS THAT MAKE A DIFFERENCE IN OUR COMMUNITY AND THE WORLD. Make a gift that costs you nothing during your lifetime? Save for retirement and support the University of St. Thomas? Use your legacy gift to set up a scholarship or benefit a particular program? St. Thomas fits that conviction perfectly by showing its students ways to make the world a better place.” – Ed LeClair `65

FOUR EASY WAYS

1

Name the University of St. Thomas as a full or partial beneficiary of a retirement account or life-insurance policy.

2

Remember the University of St. Thomas in your will or trust.

3

Fund a charitable gift annuity. In exchange for a gift of cash or stock, and an income-tax deduction, St. Thomas will pay you and/or other beneficiaries a set income for life. Name the University of St. Thomas as a POD (payable-on-death) or TOD (transfer-on-death) beneficiary on your bank or brokerage account. These are just a few of the ways you can give a planned gift to support St. Thomas students while still accomplishing your financial goals. We are happy to discuss all the possibilities available to you.
