NEWASSOCIATE DIRECTOR JOINS CATHOLIC STUDIES TEAM We are pleased to announce that Karen Laird has joined our staff as associate director of the Center for Catholic Studies. Karen has worked in marketing and communications for more than 30 years, which included an independent advertising agency,West Publishing, and as a freelance contractor. For the past 10 years, she served The Seminaries of Saint Paul at the University of St. Thomas in a variety of roles. Most recently, she was director of marketing and communications. She

concluded her work there in January 2021 to care for her parents and pursue new professional opportunities. At Catholic Studies, Karen will manage the marketing and communications and support external events, with a special focus on undergraduate and graduate students, alumni, and benefactors. “Karen brings an extraordinary set of gifts to Catholic Studies,” Dr. Naughton explains. “Her depth of mission, eloquence in communication, seasoned knowledge in marketing and relational abilities will strengthen and deepen our relations with our external community. Our future looks even brighter with Karen.”

JESSICA ZITTLOWALEMAN MOVES TOOUR SUNDAY VISITOR After 5½ years of significant contributions to St. Thomas Catholic Studies, the associate director of the Center, Jessica Zittlow Aleman ‘13 CSMA , has moved to a position at Our Sunday Visitor. While we are delighted that Jessica will continue to serve the Church with her extraordinary skills and talents, we are very sad to see her leave Catholic Studies. Jessica’s vision, competence, creativity and dedication have contributed greatly to the success of Catholic Studies. Her technical marketing and communication skills as well as strategic and institutional thinking informed by a Catholic ecclesial vision produced creative insights and excellent operational results. We will miss Jessica, and we are extremely grateful for the gifts and talents she brought to Catholic Studies. We are a better institution because of her work and well situated for the future.

IN THE NEWS: FATHER ANDREW LIAUGMINAS ‘06 NAMED TO CONGREGATION FOR THE DOCTRINE OF THE FAITH Father Andrew Liaugminas ‘06 has been appointed to serve as an official for the doctrinal section of the Holy See’s Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith. Liaugminas, a priest of the Archdiocese of Chicago, will start his position in Rome later this summer and serve there for five years. “It came as a surprise to me,” Liaugminas told Chicago Catholic. “After praying over this, I saw that it was the Lord’s will. There was a real sense of the Holy Spirit being in this call to service.” Liaugminas majored in Catholic studies, philosophy and theology at St. Thomas.
